Focus ST FMIC

Have a non-USDM Focus ST? No Problem! Now our Focus ST FMIC includes a free adapter that will work with non-USDM MAP sensors.

After months of engineering and development, cp-e™ is proud to release the ΔCore Front Mount Intercooler for the Focus ST. The stock intercooler does an excellent job for the everyday driver that doesn’t want to modify their car. However, once you find that itch to go faster, the intercooler is a must have modification.

Focus ST FMIC Design

cp-e™ started off by determining the maximum size core that could fit without major modification to the vehicle. After removing the active grill shutters, and squeezing big hands in tight spaces, cp-e™ developed the largest core available to the market, a 28” x 8.25” x 5.5” monster! This core uses the bar and plate design to help ensure a high level of efficiency.

cp-e™ then set their sights on the endtanks, developing a design that not only encloses the monstrous core, but also requires no cutting, no drilling, and no permanent modification to the vehicle. With the laser cut brackets, the intercooler will mount in the stock location while matching up to the stock intercooler piping. Customers can now upgrade their piping when their power demands need it and modify in smaller increments.

As always, the cp-e™ intercooler includes cast endtanks that are welded and pressure tested with the core. What sets these endtanks from the rest is the engineering behind their shape and internal design. Hours of design and computer flow diagrams have been put into the tanks’ design to virtually eliminate turbulence within them. Many times, upgrading an intercooler causes increased turbo-lag, and an overall pressure loss. This is because of the large size of the core and the turbulence within the endtanks. By designing the endtanks to be smaller, and more efficient cp-e™ has found a way to minimalize turbulence in order to keep the drivability of the car high, while still enlarging the intercooler drastically.

The internal design of the endtanks directs the air to bring the most optimal airflow as well as an even distribution throughout the core. In intercoolers, the back half of the core only does 25% of the cooling. The endtanks have been designed to direct the air properly into the core for the most even cooling, giving the vehicle the most consistent conditions going into the engine.

Ford Focus ST FMIC Highlights

“Turbulence

Turbulence Reduction Fins

When creating an intercooler, the goal is to maximize size, while not increasing pressure drop. Larger cores almost always exhibit some form of pressure drop, due to the massive turbulence in a large core. cp-e™ has engineered a way around this by adding our carefully calculated turbulence reduction fins to smooth out the airflow from the end tanks to the main core.

In the real world this translates to extraordinarily low pressure drop and no loss in spool times.

Fully Cast Endtanks

Fully Cast Endtanks

When durability and high horsepower are the main goals, nothing beats casting. Cut and weld sections just don’t have close to the reliability of a cast piece. The problem is that casting is too expensive and out of reach for many manufacturers.

With the ultimate product as our end goal, we only accept fully cast end tanks for all of our front mount intercoolers.

Maximized Core Size

Maximized Core Size

The EcoBoost platform has seen some incredible power gains in a very short period of time. With this in mind, we wanted to create a very large intercooler that would support both stock and big turbo applications. Even with this large size, no modification or removal of stock parts are needed.

This combined with our fin design makes this intercooler the best choice out there for both stock and big turbo upgrades.

First off, let me say that I am incredibly pleased with the performance of this product. I hooked it up with mountune charge pipes because cp-e was out of stock when I placed my order.
Pros: performance, according to the charge temp sensor monitor on my apv3, charge air is never more than 1-2 degrees above ambient during any pull. It’s easy to install, fits in the stock fmic supports.
Cons: the stock fmic weighs maybe 5lbs. This one feels like at least 20lbs. So the stock fmic mounts feel flimsy with the weight of this monster on it. Some zip ties made me feel better. Also, since it’s bigger, once installed it sits very close to the crash bar, it doesn’t have a lot of play, but it’s enough to make it hit the crash bar when you hit a bump. I added some rubber trim to act as bushing in between. Finally the bolts that hold the braces and clips for installation are already rusting.
In short in very happy with the performance of the core, but feel that corners were cut in the installation kit.

I didn’t expect a FMIC to add any noticeable power to the Focus ST, but man was I wrong! Usually a front mount intercooler just adds consistency to charge air temps, allowing you to make pulls without a loss in power. In the case of the Focus ST and the way undersized factory intercooler, there is some room on the table to gain horsepower and especially torque in addition to more consistent power delivery.

The front mount is well packaged and it really should be since it is a MASSIVE core. When I saw the core initially, I wasn’t sure how it could fit in the location of the stock front mount. After the install I was pleasantly surprised by the increase in power and torque even without a tune specific to the FMIC.

I know that some people have mentioned that the stock mounting points can’t support this weight, but I beg to differ. After a low speed (~15mph) front end collision, the bumper was beat up pretty bad, but the cp-e FMIC was miraculously still in place perfectly. If that isn’t a test for the stock mounting location then I don’t know what is.

I absolutely love this intercooler. Fit and finish is perfect. Packaging for shipping was fantastic. Install is easy enough. Charge temps are kept just above ambient. I can not say enough good things about this intercooler.

I love this intercooler! Its super thick and pokes out like a sore thumb behind the front bumper. Install was pretty easy and if i could post a picture of it i would because i think words just do not do it justice. I was worried about the looks at first when i ordered it and i couldn’t find any good pics of it mounted and ready to go. After the install and my car back on the ground, taking a few steps back all i could say was…. WOW… Thank you again CP-E for another great product!!

Hands down the best intercooler on the market. Charge temps are always cool and steady, rarely rising more than 12 degrees above ambient. 10/10 would recommend.
